That's why it's so fun. Isn't madness the essence of betting? In a capitalist world, money is life. The fate of your life is not decided with order and justice. Still, people flock to casinos because humans take pleasure in the madness of gambling their lives. Bottom line: gambling is fun because it's insane. So, let's bet it's crazy!

Yumeko Jabami to Mary Saotome.

A Girl Named Yumeko Jabami is the very first chapter of the very first volume of Kakegurui written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Toru Naomura.

Summary[]

The story begins with Ryota Suzui losing to his classmate, Mary Saotome, and thus becoming a Housepet, were he is seen being used as a slave and being physically abused by schoolmates, and being used as a bench. After Yumeko Jabami enrolled in Hyakkaou Private Academy, Ryota shows her around the school. Later on, Yumeko is being challenged by Mary for a "Rock-Papers-Scissors" gamble, were Yumeko loses all her chips during the gamble. But the gamble continues when Yumeko makes a huge risk, betting 10 million yen.

Plot[]

The chapter begins with a boy raising his bet by ten chips in a poker game where several other people were watching. Despite being nervous, he trusted that his hand, a Full House, would be enough to win that game, however, his opponent just laughs and regrets the defeat of the other when revealing his impressive Royal Flush. To the laughter of those watching, she hoped he would continue to work hard like a "housepet."

After that, there's a brief explanation of how Hyakkaou Private School works and then the same girl from before wins another poker game and calls the boy, now wearing a "housepet" ID, to bring him a melon bun. and red tea ; the other three who were with her also asked to bring him food and he was really distressed by the situation he was in.

On his way, however, he met another boy and two who accompanied him; he punched him in the face and stole his wallet, claiming he would give it back as soon as he was human again, but he says he had no money. Annoyed, the biggest one of the group throws it in the trash and leaves with the other two. The boy, injured, retrieves his wallet from the trash while wearing an expression of defeat. As soon as he comes back, the girl complains that her legs were numb, then uses him for support while going back to play.

There is another explanation of how classification works within the school.

Then there is what appears to be a time jump, where a new student transfers and introduces herself to the class as Yumeko Jabami. The other students were overjoyed and the teacher asked the boy, now named Ryota Suzui, to show her around the school and Ryota accepted, thinking that maybe something good could happen even if it was a pet. The same girl from before, the one who beat Ryota in poker, was irritated that the new girl had caught the attention of the rest of the class.

Outside, Yumeko was happy to have transferred. Ryota asks if she knew how to bet; she replies that at least she knew the rules. He explains the betting tradition to her and that he would get involved in one sooner or later, so she would be careful considering that the stakes were high as most students come from wealthy families. Her reaction was different from what he expected, however: she laughed and just said it sounded quite interesting.

After class, Yumeko was surrounded by her classmates who asked her all sorts of questions. Ryota was slightly surprised that she was already popular on her first day. His thoughts were interrupted when the girl who had defeated him earlier rose and stood in front of Yumeko, introducing herself as Mary Saotome, asking her to treat her well, which was returned. She then asked if she had a time, if she wanted to bet with her, which she immediately and happily agreed to.

The students started whispering to each other and Yumeko asked what kind of game they would be playing. Mary then explains the rules of Rock, Paper and Scissors by Voting to her. Ryota tries to interfere and stop them from playing, but Mary interrupts him, asking if he has a problem, and he reluctantly denies it. After explaining everything necessary, Yumeko excitedly claims she wanted to try and play and Mary praises her for her "appropriate" attitude, ordering Ryota to go get the chips and, again reluctantly, he does.

After he brings them, Mary explains how many tokens are worth and how much each one is worth, and Ryota worriedly thinks they were too high for a simple game of rock, paper, and scissors. Mary lets Yumeko decide the amount to bet, asking them to play a test round; the latter decides to bet two chips, the equivalent of twenty thousand yen. Again, Ryota is mentally sorry that she was already participating in this on her first day.

He explains how card possibilities work in that game and quietly observes when the two have played their first round. Yumeko won and Mary congratulated her for it, the former taking two of the latter's chips. Mary asked if she could better understand the rules and asked them to continue, asking her how much she would bet next. To both her and Ryota's surprise, Yumeko decided to bet fifty chips, the equivalent of five hundred thousand yen. Mary points out how she seemed to have a good fighting spirit and she denies it however they start the round. Once they get their three cards, play, and it ends up in a draw, then play again, being Mary's victory, however, Yumeko didn't seem too affected by that, pointing out that she would lose anyway because her cards are all scissors.

She points out that she was lucky to have won a big bet, telling them to continue. They bet two chips in that round and Yumeko wins again, being congratulated by Mary. She asks how much they would bet and Yumeko again says it would be fifty chips, Mary deducing that she wanted to get back what she lost in the penultimate round, claiming she liked it. When they show their cards, it ended in another draw, cheering those watching; Mary points out that they thought alike and played again, ending in Mary's victory and celebration. Those watching noted how Yumeko had already lost a million yen.

Both continue playing until Yumeko runs out of chips, a fact said by Mary. Although everyone, including Ryota, tried to imagine that she would be scared or maybe desperate, she wasn't. Instead, she asked if she could get additional chips. Mary nodded excitedly, though she internally laughed at her for putting herself in a quagmire she couldn't get out of, and asked how many she would add and was surprised when she heard her say "a thousand tokens." In reality, they all stayed; the equivalent amount was ten million yen. They were even more surprised when she claimed that she would bet everything on the next round.

Mary sure of her victory

Mary became enraged and pointed out how they could not bet such amount without a concrete guarantee, but Yumeko refutes her by taking money in bills from her purse. People around her wondered why she took so much money with her, and Mary said it was insane to bet such a high amount on a simple game of rock, paper, and scissors. Speaking that madness was what made gambling so fun, Yumeko asked them to bet into madness. Mary refused to play and Yumeko teased her, asking if she was chickening out. Afraid of having her pride hurt, the other could do nothing but accept her challenge.

Ryota wondered how she could make such a challenge right after transferring from school, but Yumeko wasn't anxious or nervous, but rather calm and even a little excited about it, which made Mary wonder how she could be in this state of mind. when such an insane bet was going on, but she ignored it, since she was sure she would win due to her cheating involving twenty-one students in that room. All she needed was a paper in hand to win the round, grinning maniacally when she saw she had two papers and a rock.

Yumeko defeats Mary

Mary is confused by Yumeko being so relaxed and wonders if she was sure she would win, but denies in her mind that she couldn't have known the cards placed inside the box; she would play role and win. Yumeko, however, asks if she thought she didn't realize the whole scheme; Mary asked if she was trying to delay revealing the cards, but Yumeko says it wasn't like that, after all, the fun would start now. With that, she asks her if she had nothing more to say, hurry up and choose her card at once. Yumeko laughs and just says she warned her. Annoyed, Mary demands that they play at once and the others watch in awe and awe as the two show their cards. Mary with paper and Yumeko with scissors, meaning the latter had won that round, much to everyone's surprise, including the first.

Not believing what happened, Mary kept her face scared as Yumeko collected the eight million eight hundred thousand yen she would be owing her thanks to her recent loss, pointing out that because she said they would need a concrete guarantee that she would have. the money, she would have enough to pay it, however, when Mary mumbles that she didn't have it, Yumeko scares her, asking her to say it again, and the first one, humiliated, asks for a few days so that she could pay her back. appropriate way. The last one gathers her things and gets up, leaving Mary in the same position as she says she was satisfied for that day, asking everyone to consider her a classmate from the next day, and then leaving.

Yumeko realized that Ryota was collaborating with Mary's trick

Yumeko realized that Ryota was collaborating with Mary's trick.

As she walked down the hall, however, she was called by Ryota, who asked her how she managed to pull out scissors in the last round and how she found out about Mary's scheme, so Yumeko explained in detail how she noticed throughout the match that votes were being manipulated. and it was not Mary who was giving the signal to the people who participated in the trick, but someone who was behind her, namely Ryota; she got to know the signals she gave using a hand mirror. Finally, he asked how she managed to get scissors out considering there were two or three in the box and he was surprised to see her say she was just lucky.

Ryota stated that there was no reason for her to have said that she had found everything out for Mary, but only because she liked to take chances. Yumeko claimed that losing by excessive risk was boring, but excessive advantage was also boring. Understanding, Ryota said he would never achieve that kind of thinking; then said he would drop out of school due to the huge debts he got thanks to the bets he took part in trying to pay them and he couldn't take it anymore, if he were like her, maybe he wouldn't have these problems. Therefore, he apologized to Yumeko for having helped with the cheat, much to her surprise.

However, Yumeko took money from her purse and handed it to him, thanking him for the exciting game he played. When Ryota tried to refuse, she just said that she hated playing knowing she would win or lose, thanking him again, much to his surprise, as he found that she really wasn't a normal girl, but rather a gambler.
