His sharp gaze pierces through my eyes. I’m almost overwhelmed by his fighting spirit, but I can’t lose because Mary’s date is at stake. After all, I, too, am a man.

Ryota Suzui to himself

Beach and Ace is the 3rd chapter of Kakegurui Trip, written by Hikaru Muno and illustrated by Tooru Naomura.

Summary[]

Ryota, Yumeko, and Mary go to the beach. Yumeko has ordered Mary to go and wear the swimsuit she bought for her. Yumeko is wearing the school swimsuit.

Ryota finds Yumeko to be bad at swimming, as she clings to Mary most of the time. Mary tells him to swim ahead of them. After a long trip, they return to their parasol. On the way back, Ryota bought Frankfurt sausages for them since they didn’t eat breakfast. He then goes, on their command, to buy a Coke for Mary and another drink for Yumeko.

While Ryota is away, somebody walks up to them. His hair is dark brown and he’s muscular. He introduces himself. It’s Ace, a third-year student in Hyakkaou.

Ace suggests to Mary that they go buy drinks together. Mary responds that someone is already buying some for her. Yumeko introduces Mary and herself. He calls Mary “Princess Amber”[1] and says that by the time they return, he’ll be escorting her home. Ryota returns, and Ace doesn’t care about him at all. Ace firmly believes it was their destiny to meet. He requests that Mary go on a date with him. Mary asks him to leave her alone.

Ace then asks that they settle it with gambling. Yumeko coerces her into accepting. She explains that, at least, if Mary was to lose, she’d go on a date. Ryota, confused, simply hands Yumeko her juice and Mary her Coke.

Ace brings a box to play Twister. Mary completely refuses. The two Frankfurt sausage sticks get cut in half. Each with distinguishable ends. Pairings will be determined by who gets matching sticks. So whoever gets a stick of the same end as Ace will challenge him. If he wins that challenge, he gets to date Mary. Mary forces Ryota to participate in the drawing of sticks as well. Ryota’s stick matches with Ace’s. Mary’s stick matches with Yumeko’s. Therefore, the game will oppose Ace to Ryota. Mary tells Ryota that she’ll kill him if he loses. Ace finally introduces himself to Ryota.

As the game lasts, Mary tells Ryota not to kneel even if it costs him his life. Both of the men are struggling. They get entangled. It’s Ryota’s turn. Mary handpicks a move. He gets yellow left hand. After two more turns of rigging, Ace is in a bridge position, but he has no way not to be eliminated other than rotating his body 180. The game ends in Ryota’s win. He’s proud of his accomplishment. Ace concedes defeat, but assures that he’ll make Mary look at him one way or another. He’ll participate in the Poker Tournament. He goes away.

As they’ve drawn matching ends of sticks, Yumeko asks Mary to play Twister with her. A huge crowd of boys and girls gather to see the game. Mary wins. The Poker Tournament is coming soon.

Plot[]

Part 1[]

Ryota overeats as the meal for breakfast is extravagant. Yumeko and Mary skip breakfast. The three meet in the lobby. On the second day of their two-night, three-day stay, they're allowed to wear casual clothes. Ryota wears jeans and a sky-blue T-shirt. Yumeko wears a white one-piece dress with bare shoulders, while Mary wears a T-shirt and short shorts. Mary is tired, as Yumeko clung to her all night. Also, she had already stayed at the casino for long, because of Yumeko’s loss to Izayoi. On the other hand, Yumeko says she slept soundly because Mary was next to her.

Ryota has brought his swimsuit. All were aware that there was a beach. Mary asks if she really has to swim. She’s reminded that she lost a bet to Yumeko before coming to the island, so she has to obey her orders. She’s going to have to wear the swimsuit Yumeko brought for her.

Part 2[]

They arrive on the beach. Ryota places his parasol and a beach bed. As Yumeko takes out her dress to reveal her beach clothes, he is speechless. It’s her school swimsuit. Mary walks in. Yumeko calls the suit wonderful and tells Ryota to take a look. Mary implores him not to. He still does. Mary tells him to leave and go back to the hotel room.

Yumeko suggests they take a picture later. Mary declines. As Ryota looks at Mary again, she throws a beach ball at his face.

Part 3[]

Ryota finds Yumeko to be bad at swimming, as she clings to Mary. Mary tells him to swim ahead of them. After a long trip, they return to their parasol. On the way back, Ryota bought Frankfurt sausages for them since they didn’t eat breakfast. He then goes, on their command, to buy a Coke for Mary and another drink for Yumeko.

Part 4[]

The narration shifts to Mary’s perspective. She rethinks about the impact of Yumeko on her school life. She had stood at the top of her class, uncontested, until Yumeko turned the situation upside down. Mary also realizes that Yumeko has a strong desire for gambling, not for the money itself, but for the joy she feels when gambling.

Somebody walks up to their parasol. His hair is dark brown and he’s muscular. Mary internally mocks him for waiting for Ryota to leave before coming here. He introduces himself. It’s Ace.

Part 5[]

Ace suggests to Mary that they go buy drinks together. Mary responds that someone is already buying some for her. Yumeko introduces Mary and herself. Ace talks of himself as a third-year student in Hyakkaou. He thanks Yumeko and refers to her as “Darkness Princess”[2]. He calls Mary “Princess Amber”[1] and says that by the time they return, he’ll be escorting her home. He kisses Mary’s hand. She draws it away. Ryota returns, and Ace doesn’t care about him at all. Ace admits to Mary he might’ve gone too far, but explains that it was their destiny to meet. He calls Mary his soulmate and requests that they go on a date. Mary asks him to leave her alone in less polite language than she used before.

Ace then asks that they settle it with gambling. Yumeko coerces her into accepting. She explains that, at least, if Mary was to lose, she’d go on a date. Ace understands that she has to obey Yumeko’s orders. Mary shouts that she’s going to win. Ace appreciates her loud declaration. Ryota, confused, simply hands Yumeko her juice and Mary her Coke. Mary, angry, finishes her Frankfurt sausage.

Part 6[]

The perspective switches to Ryota again. Ace brings a colourful box. As he throws the box to Mary, she realizes it’s Twister. She completely refuses. Yumeko walks closer to Ace and tells him that pairings will be decided by her methods. The two Frankfurt sausage sticks get cut in half. Each with distinguishable ends. Ace gets one of the four parts. Whoever gets a stick of the same end as him will challenge him. If he wins that challenge, he gets to date Mary. Mary forces Ryota to participate in the drawing of sticks as well. Ace doesn’t care. He still refers to her as “Princess Amber”. Mary wonders why she attracts this kind of person.

Those who draw cannot distinguish the sticks as their distinct ends are put into the sand. During Yumeko’s draw, Ryota is anxious, as he doesn’t want her to play. But he’s also terrified of the other possible outcomes. As she shows her stick, Ryota is relieved when he notices it’s not matching, so Yumeko won’t have to play with Ace. Mary draws. The stick matches with Yumeko’s, not with Ace’s. Therefore, the game will oppose Ace to Ryota. Mary tells Ryota that she’ll kill him if he loses. Ace finally introduces himself to Ryota.

Part 7[]

Mary’s point of view is used. Mary tells Ryota not to kneel even if it costs him his life.

Ryota is tasked with spinning the spinner.

Part 8[]

A huge crowd of boys and girls gather to see the game. Mary wins through willpower and receives a wave of applause.

Part 9[]

Midari walks on the beach. She hasn’t had time to enjoy herself as trash, empty juice cans, and plastic containers are spread all over the beach. She’s tasked with picking them up. Midari then notices two boys walking ahead, tossing their drink cups into the sand. She scolds and threatens them. Scared, the boys apologize, grab their cups, and run away. Runa points out that it isn’t an easy job. She notices parts of Frankfurt sausage sticks buried on the sand.

Runa mentions the upcoming Poker Tournament. Despite the possibility of the Kansankai plotting something, Midari lets it go. She doesn’t believe it’s any of her business.
