Yumeko Jabami to Itsuki Sumeragi.

A Boring Girl is the second chapter of Volume One of Kakegurui written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Toru Naomura.

Summary[]

Yumeko Jabami and Ryota Suzui became friends. As they return to school, they find their classmates humiliating Mary Saotome for becoming a Housepet, following her defeat against Yumeko. Ryota explains to her the Housepet System and how the current president has become president of the school by betting with the Former President. Another girl on the Student Council who has completed a card game comes to greet Yumeko, and offers to play against her. They play Double Memory, in which Yumeko loses. Not accepting the results, she begs Itsuki to a rematch. She accepts, but this time Yumeko must bet her nails. Having gathered several pairs of cards, she reveals Itsuki's cheat and wants to play another game with higher stakes, but gets bored by Itsuki's crying due to her exposition.

Plot[]

Yumeko asking Ryota to call her by her first name

Yumeko asking Ryota to call her by her first name.

The day after the first bet of Yumeko Jabami, she excitedly came alongside Ryota Suzui and greeted her; he greeted her back, calling her last name. She scolded her and asked her to call her by her first name since they were friends. Ashamed, accepted.

As they entered Hyakkaou Private School, Ryota thought how not a normal girl, considering the events of the day before, but thanked her for the money she gave her and said she would pay it back slowly. Yumeko, however, replied that it was a gift and that he wasn't supposed to worry about it, but the other one refused not to pay it back.

However, when they entered her classroom, they found Mary Saotome's desk vandalized and herself in front of it, the other students around her laughing and mocking her. Yumeko, curious, approaches and asks exactly what was going on. Mary angrily yells that it was all her fault for having lost against her earlier, then turns away and mutters that she should get over it. Ryota approached Yumeko and called her to talk.

Yumeko happy to have transferred

Yumeko happy to have transferred.

In the cafeteria, he explained to her how it was a "tradition" within the school and that everything changed when the current president of the Student Union took power. When Yumeko asked if it was possible for someone from the first year to become president, Ryota also explained that there was no limit to running for election, but the current president in particular was not normally elected, but rather won a bet against the former president, and as soon as she took over, it modified the entire operation, increasing discrimination with the implementation of the pet system.

When it was over, he realized he was shivering and wondered if she was scared, but the opposite: she was happy to be transferred. She excitedly asks what kinds of bets were administered, whether there were original games, what else could be wagered besides money, whether the bills were affected by the bets, and what kind of penalties were applied to pets; questions that asked Ryota if she wasn't afraid of any of it.

She finally noticed that he didn't have her own identification and he replied that, thanks to her, he was able to pay off her debt and was now no longer a "housepet"; she congratulated. Their conversation was interrupted by a group of students standing around one another. Ryota introduced her to Yumeko as Itsuki Sumeragi, a first-year student who donated enough money to the Council to join; he also said that her father owned the second largest manufacturer in Japan, making it quite wealthy, and besides, he was good at gambling, especially card games.

When he was talking about her, however, the said whose came near their table and invited Yumeko to bet with her. Ryota even says something, but is ignored by Itsuki as she points to it as the school topic for defeating Mary the day before; the first noticed how fast the story spread. The youngest of the three claimed she was good at games, so she wanted to compare her skills; the other one laughed and commented that it sounded interesting, asking her name. Itsuki introduces herself and Yumeko accepts her challenge, Ryota noticing how her warning had no effect.

She explained the rules of the Dual Memory Game, what they would be playing; Yumeko cheers up and agrees to participate. The people around were immediately interested to know that it would be Itsuki and Yumeko to bet. Ryota also notices how everyone was already talking about Yumeko even though it was only her second day inside Hyakkaou.

Not caring about the crowd, noting that Yumeko had bet ten million with Mary the day before, Itsuki took twenty Council tokens, each worth a million, and proposed a bet of twenty million yen. Yumeko, however, apologized to Itsuki for not being able to get twenty million and she comments how she really didn't look like someone who spent money or maybe was indebted to someone. Yumeko looks at Ryota and he apologizes.

Anyway, Itsuki said she didn't need to worry as he would lend her the twenty million. Ryota wonders what the benefit of her doing that would be. Itsuki explained that it was far better to get everyone interested in her father's company toys; therefore, Yumeko accepted, ignoring Ryota.

Itsuki and Yumeko then start playing. They didn't form a pair for a long time, until Yumeko was the first to form a pair. They formed several pairs and people around them noticed how they remained undefeated for some time, as if they always knew where the cards were if they had ever turned it over before. Ryota ended up noticing it too.

At one point, however, Itsuki ended up getting ten cards in a single turn, giving her the advantage over her opponent. Yumeko played next, but didn't pair, causing Itsuki to win when he played again. Ryota worriedly noticed that she didn't have the money to pay her, and so, she would become a pet.

Itsuki wants Yumeko's nails

Itsuki wants Yumeko's nails.

She called her and asked them to play another game, actually begged her, since she couldn't pay the twenty million she owed. Laughing, Itsuki opened a box and told her about her hobby of collecting nails, but told the secret about them: they were all human nails, taken from human fingers. She said that it would be easy to get more with her money, but nobody really sells her nails, that's why the nails from her collection were acquired through gambling, soon after alleging that she wanted Yumeko's nails.

Ryota thinks like the rumors about a first-year girl who forced people to bet their nails are true and tries to stop Yumeko from accepting, but to no avail. She just says that there was no other way unless he wanted to pay her for her, making her back down. Using two new decks, Itsuki secured the betting terms with her opponent and then began to play.

Itsuki, however, was certain that she would win thanks to her cheating with markings on the cards as they were from a line that she personally developed. When she noticed, Yumeko paired up on her first shift, then asked about the total income of Itsuki's family, continuing to pair up, much to the confusion of the other. She then warned her that, before betting on the family's work, she should be prepared.

Connecting the dots, Itsuki quickly thought that she might have figured out the trick and that if it got out, it would be too bad for her father's job, deciding that she would turn over all the cards as soon as it was her turn, but her turn has never come since Yumeko turned over fifty-four cards, signifying that she had won that game, much to everyone's surprise, including the one she lost.

She snarled like she found out where the cards were and Yumeko simply said that if she had been a little more careful, she wouldn't have figured out the card marks trick. Itsuki wonders how she was even able to memorize all the patterns and connect them together. Yumeko suggested that they play something else and, perhaps, both bet their nails as a common risk between the two, since it would disrupt the loser's daily life. The mere thought of the risks taken in such a gamble excited her. Yumeko begged her to bet with her like that, screamed, spat in her face, but Itsuki was just too scared and cried with fear, begging for forgiveness. Ryota tries to get Yumeko away from Itsuki, but she just comments how annoying it was.

The Student Council

The Student Council.

A girl watching from a distance thought how interesting it was, and then appeared in the Student Union room, having finished telling them the whole story. One of them comments how having defeated Itsuki after he transferred was incredible, but another just points out that she only joined the Council for donating money. Another said that she was getting all convinced for having defeated "small fish" and another just said that was why she was against her entry, pointing out another as being responsible for her recommendation, but he told her to shut up.

The girl who has been watching just asks what they would do about Yumeko. The president, Kirari Momobami, suggests that they play with her a bit.
