I will rule the whole shellfish, both the lowlifes rich and the dead-eyed slaves of this academy.

—Housepet Girl to herself

The prologue of Kakegurui Trip is written by Hikaru Muno.

Summary[]

Hyakkaou Private Academy is a traditional and prestigious school, founded 122 years ago, with many children of influential people in the political and business worlds enrolled. A housepet entered this school with high hopes. She was not born into a wealthy family, but her parents took great pains to send her there. Her master asks her to go to the store and buy some bread. Girls who were her classmates swept the housepet off her feet. She fell to the floor, and was kicked and giggled at. The mitten stammers “It’s me”. She knows that If she doesn’t respond immediately, a second attack will come. They don’t see her as human. She then describes how the school works and the housepet system.

The housepet girl heads to the school store. She has a housepet tag hung on her neck. The word "Mitten" is written on it in large letters so that anyone can see it. Students who pass by her mock her. Sometimes they show pity, but they don't offer a hand to help her. That’s because housepets aren’t seen as people. If someone treats the persecuted differently, other students will see them as an anomaly. To become a housepet is to become a socially vulnerable person officially recognized by the school. The amount of money to pay is not an amount that students can easily afford to pay by working part-time. Students born into rich families can ask their parents for money, but those from a lower-middle class family, like the narrator, will always have to worry about money. So they need to gamble.

Some people who throw in what little money they have in order to get a big payout. The narrator lost that gamble with her pride as a human being as stakes. In Hyakkaou Private Academy, no one appreciates a bit of sporadic study. This is because it is insignificant for students who will be in a position to use others in the future.

What is needed is tact, mind-reading, and the strength to win at the critical moments. The most important thing is to be strong in the heat of the moment. The narrator's parents were not aware of how this school was. She believes that it would have been wise to leave early. However, she doesn’t want to change schools. She knows how hard it is for her parents. The mitten remembers a face full of expectations sending her out of her house. She clasped the houspet tag. She wants a mountain of cash in her hands, so she can rule over every rich person and every housepet in this academy.

Plot[]

Hyakkaou Private Academy is a traditional and prestigious school, founded 122 years ago, with many children of influential people in the political and business worlds enrolled. A housepet entered this school with high hopes. She was not born into a wealthy family, but her parents took great pains to send her there. They never showed their hardships, but only smiled.

They don’t see her as human.

She explains that there is a class system in the academy which is not complicated. There are only two kinds of people: the oppressors and the oppressed. The mitten describes the housepet system. The students of the school must pay a large sum of money to the student council, which has a powerful authority both inside and outside the school. The amount of money paid is announced in the form of a ranking of all students, and students in the bottom 100 are fido if they’re males and mittens if they’re females. These students are “disqualified” as human beings.

She headed to the school store. She has a tag hung on her neck. The word "Mitten" is written on it in large letters so that anyone can see it. Students who pass by her mock her. It's the same as the way they look at a dirty stray cat living in the back alleys of the city. Sometimes they show pity, but they don't offer a hand to help her. That’s because housepets aren’t seen as people. If someone treats the persecuted differently, other students will see them as an anomaly. To become a housepet is to become a socially vulnerable person officially recognized by the school.

It's easier to be on the side of the paid oppressors than the other way around. The amount of money to pay is not an amount that students can easily afford to pay by working part-time. Students born into rich families can ask their parents for money, but those from a lower-middle class family, like the narrator, will always have to worry about money. So they need to gamble.

Gambling is openly permitted at this school under the centralized control of the student council. Some gamble during breaks, others specialize in a game as a club activity. There are also people who throw in what little money they have in order to get a big payout.

Those who are not born into a rich family and are weak in gambling inevitably lose their value as human beings. The mitten’s parents were not aware of how this school was. The narrator believes that it would have been wise to leave early. However, she doesn’t want to change schools. She knows how hard it is for her parents. The mitten remembers a face full of expectations sending her out of her house. She clasped the housepet tag. She wants a mountain of cash in her hands, so she can rule over every rich person, and every slave in this academy.
