When the country embarks on a casino business as part of its tourism policy, Ryouran Island will surely serve as a model case. In fact, people from the political and business worlds have visited the island many times. It is a sacred land that bears the future of Japan. To set foot there is to enter the realm of the upper class. It's absolutely unacceptable for a housepet to dishonor a sacred place.

Izayoi Kifune to Yumeko Jabami

Ryouran Island School Trip is the 1st chapter of Kakegurui Trip, written by Hikaru Muno and illustrated by Tooru Naomura.

Summary[]

Ryota is in his classroom. He notices Mary, the person who made him become a housepet. She seems unhappy to him. Mary tells him that it’s her normal face. She’s wearing the summer uniform. Yumeko arrives, also wearing the summer uniform. Yumeko sniffs wildly and holds out a piece of paper. She asks Mary and Ryota why they didn’t tell her about an event. “Ryouran Island School Trip Announcement.” Yumeko was a transfer student this year, so she didn’t know about this.

Mary explains to Yumeko what the piece of paper is about. There is a secluded island called Ryouran, which is owned by the school. During the long holidays, it's used for school trips. There are many students who have been there, but no one knows where the island is, and it is not on any map. Rumor has it that the island is to the south in terms of direction. The piece of paper was an invitation to a casino there. Yumeko guesses that they have blackjack, roulette, and slots. She asks if they can play baccarat. The game she’s most excited about is poker.

There is no entrance fee. Ryota wonders why everyone doesn’t go there. Mary explains that students usually go abroad for long vacations, they don’t need to worry about the trip’s cost. Yumeko asks again if Ryota and Mary will go. Mary passes. She explains that the casino is run by the Tourism Industry Research Association. This group is also known as Kansankai. It’s a small group of people getting huge profits from the casino. Mary believes there must be something special about the way they run their business without charging a lot. She thinks it’s too dangerous to go there. Yumeko tells Mary that she worries too much. Mary believes that the student council is after Yumeko, and people other than them could also be after her. Yumeko suggests that they gamble to decide. Yumeko tells Mary that if she wins, Mary will have to obey her during their trip at Ryouran Island, and if Mary wins, Yumeko will become her housepet. Mary accepts to gamble. Yumeko suggests they play Closed Poker. Ryota will be the dealer. He remembers that it’s with this game that Mary turned him into a housepet. Mary smiles had not had a proper match with Yumeko since her defeat in Vote Rock-Paper-Scissors.

Ryota gathered in the morning and boarded a cruise ship at the pier with Yumeko and Mary. The ship was not luxurious, but it was large enough to accommodate several hundred people. Students can order free drinks at the bar. Everyone is wearing uniforms because the trip is organized by the island’s school and they required it. Mary regrets playing Change Poker with Yumeko. She lost the game. Yumeko had a hand with three K cards. She knew that if she drew one card, she would win the hand. Mary collapsed after her defeat. Yumeko's revealed hand was a full house. It was made from three of a kind and one pair. Ryota was again horrified by Yumeko's strength to pull off such a hand in the first hand.

Someone called out to Ryota, Yumeko, and Mary, bringing them some water. Without looking at the owner of the voice, Ryota took the cup offered to him and sipped it. He thanks the person that brought him the cup. Yumeko points out how this person brought many people. Ryota turns around. There was a group of people with their hands in front of their knees and their heads hanging down. Only the person in the center looked up. She’s very pleased to meet them both for the first time.

Izayoi Kifune

She presents herself. Her name is Izayoi Kifune. She is the manager and owner of the casino on Ryouran Island, the destination of the ship. She is also the president of the Kansankai. Izayoi is even a student at Hyakkaou Academy. She’s in her third year. She apologizes for the crime someone has committed. She pushed a boy’s back to stand in front of her. His shoulders were shaking, and he looked frightened.

After the Closed Poker game was decided, Yumeko was quickly heading to the reception desk with the application form for three people. He was the one who had accepted the Yumeko’s reception. This person, after receiving it, didn't secure a room for Mary and Ryota. He apologizes, as they've received a lot of applications in a rush just before the book of applications was about to close.

Izayoi gets angry at him, asking him. She forces him to bow to their guests. She threatens to throw him overboard. He gets terrified and says he'll manage the room. Kifune says that they’re absolutely obligated to guarantee the best service to their customers and can’t allow themselves to fail to do so for any reason. Izayoi grabbed the boy’s hair and pushed him to the floor. The boy apologizes again. He stands up, takes a step forward, and holds out his palm toward Yumeko. Izayoi makes the boy prepare a VIP river suite for them. Yumeko did not smile at all, but remained silent and stared intently into Izayoi’s eyes.

Izayoi tells the boy to get out of here and call the island staff to prepare a room. Ryota is afraid of her. Izayoi moved extremely close to Yumeko. She challenges Yumeko to a gamble. If Yumeko wins, Izayoi will offer her the suite she mentioned earlier. She will also provide Yumeko with her own personal staff. Yumeko could use any room service she likes. Izayoi would also secure her a VIP seat in the casino. Yumeko would also have a good view of the whole area from above. Mary doesn’t think Yumeko should involve herself in this. Yumeko accepts the challenge.

Izayoi pointed at a bar counter a dozen meters away. Passengers came and went, receiving drinks in cups from the bartender. All the drinks are free. Izayoi specifies that they only serve non-alcoholic cold drinks. They’ll play a game of guessing what drink the next customer will order. For the guess to be valid, the customer needs to declare the exact drink. For example, if a player declares "Ginger ale", and a visitor orders "Shirley Temple”, the result is not valid. Shirley Temple is made with ginger ale and a splash of grenadine, garnished with a maraschino cherry.

Mary complains because Izayoi may be familiar with all kinds of drinks, but Yumeko and her aren’t. Izayoi made someone hand them a menu. It also contains a list of all orders other than those listed here. The game will begin with the next customer. Ryota has never seen or read any of these drinks’ names. Mary tells her that it’s possible she has cherry-picked customers. She wants to decide on the next customer. Izayoi refuses to negotiate with Mary and says that it’s Yumeko’s gamble. Yumeko decides on which guest she wants to use.

Ryota believes that there is no way to pinpoint the drink that the next customer will order. He thinks Yumeko should avoid drinks on the menu that are not known for their contents or taste. Ryota would also limit himself to fruity beverages. He’d also consider the temperature and weather. For example, no one would order hot coffee under the sunny sky in the middle of summer. He’s certain that Izayoi already thought about all of this. Ryota wondered if Izayoi might be using a radio or some other device to listen in on their orders. There was nothing under Izayoi’s windswept hair.

Ryota thinks that this game is sure to be played over and over again, unless there is a big coincidence. There are more than a hundred kinds of drinks. One of the best ways is to stick to the drinks that are likely to be ordered most frequently. Ryota feels like it is more likely that they will order something refreshing, such as lemonade. Yumeko and Izayoi went to see a female student who had just arrived. There was nothing distinctive about her appearance. It would be difficult to guess what she likes. He thinks Yumeko might know her.

They’re going to declare at the same time, it’s a rule. Yumeko declares that she ordered lemonade, so Ryota believes they had the same thought process. He felt happy. Ryota failed to hear Izayoi’s declaration. He asks Mary what Izayoi ordered. Mary ignored his question, looking at Izayoi. She has not missed Izayoi’s declaration. Izayoi guessed Café au lait, shocking Ryota. Mary confirmed the declaration of Izayoi. Ryota thinks that Yumeko has the advantage this turn. He wonders how Izayoi's declaration will affect the next game and onward. He thinks she might be preparing a strategy. The bartender handed the girl the drink. The girl walked toward the bench behind them.

Izayoi approached the female student. She explains that she’s currently in a gambling session with a customer. Izayoi asks her for her drink and says that they’ll hand her a new one right away. The girl was puzzled but accepted to hand Izayoi her drink. Izayoi walks toward them and stops in front of Mary. Mary is confused but checks the contents of the drink. She quickly swallows the liquid from the cup. Mary had a suspicious look on her face. Ryota is stupefied. Izayoi asks Mary how she likes it. Mary remained motionless while holding the cup. Ryota walks up to Mary and looks into the cup in her hand. By all appearances, it was Café au lait. Izayoi claims her victory in this gamble. Ryota walks up to Yumeko and looks into her face.

Izayoi explains that when the country embarks on a casino business as part of its tourism policy, Ryouran Island will surely serve as a model case. In fact, people from the political and business worlds have visited the island many times. It is a sacred land that bears the future of Japan. To set foot there is to enter the realm of the upper class. Izayoi says that she’s sure Yumeko understands what she's trying to say. She can’t allow housepets to dishonor the place.

Yumeko, Mary, and Ryota were all housepets at some point. Izayoi says they will prepare a linen room as promised. She attacks Yumeko and leaves with her followers. Ryota, Mary, and Yumeko remained silent. Ryota believes she must have been targeting Yumeko from the beginning. The fact that they didn't have a room ready must have been a lie, an excuse to gamble. He questions what was the point of turning Yumeko's room into a linen room. Since Izayoi is the ruler of Ryouran Island, if she just wanted to make her feel bad, she could have done things way worse.

Yumeko tells them that she’s fine, despite Izayoi having attacked her. Yumeko says “I see” and laughs. Mary got angry. She believes that Izayoi is so arrogant. She stomped on the deck floor with great force. Yumeko apologizes for her loss. Yumeko rushed to the front of the ship. She saw the island from far away. Ryota and Mary followed her. The island is covered with trees.

They arrived at their room. It was not a spacious room. It contained a computer, a telephone, and a number of documents. Izayoi was in the next room, speaking with the man that she was punishing earlier. Izayoi tells him that he’s a good actor. He thanks her. The man did not know about the gamble at all. Izayoi tells him that there was a trick to it. She had given the instructions to the bartender in advance.

The man says he will always do his utmost for the development of the Kansankai and for Izayoi. She answers that she has high expectations for members of the staff of the Kansankai. She asks him to continue to lend her his strength. Izayoi adds that she knew Yumeko was on the ship. She set out to test her strength. She believes that Yumeko was not great after all. A poker tournament will be held just like they planned.

Plot[]

Part 1[]

Ryota is in an ordinary high school classroom. During the lunch break, students gamble. Students playing blackjack are handing over money at the same desk where they had been spreading out their textbooks. When Ryota first entered the school, he was bewildered, but as a second-year student, he has gotten used to it. Ryota might be a student at Hyakkaou Private Academy, but he doesn't like gambling. He even acknowledges that he isn’t good at it. In fact, he used to be a housepet a little while ago. Ryota notices Mary, the person who made him become a housepet. She seems unhappy to him. Mary tells him that it’s her normal face. She’s wearing the summer uniform.

Mary asks Ryota where did Yumeko go, since they’re always together. Ryota sees Mary as a strong and prominent gambler in the academy. He lost a lot of games to her. That’s when he became a housepet. None of Ryota’s classmates wanted to gamble against Mary. Mary asks Ryota if he has any friends, as she never sees him talking to anyone. Ryota laughs and responds that Mary is no different. Mary calls him a jerk. She blushed and got angry. The truth is that there are no classmates who are interested in getting involved with them. Suddenly, Yumeko arrives.

She’s also wearing the summer uniform. Yumeko sniffs wildly and holds out a piece of paper. She asks Mary and Ryota why they didn’t tell her about an event. “Ryouran Island School Trip Announcement”. Yumeko was a transfer student this year, so she didn’t know about this. When she arrived at the school, Ryota was happy to see her defeat student council members. The student council members were not only famous for their financial power, boldness, intelligence, and narrow-mindedness. They were also famous for their ability to win in gambles. A mysterious girl appearing in the school defeating multiple members of the student council would unsurprisingly become the center of attention. However, her true identity was still largely undisclosed. Even Ryota, who watched her rapid progress from up close, sometimes wonders how much he really knows about Yumeko. He wonders what lies deep within her.

Mary explains to Yumeko what the piece of paper is about. There is a secluded island called Ryouran, which is owned by the school. During the long holidays, it's used for school trips. There are many students who have been there, but no one knows where the island is, and it is not on any map. This school can pull off such a trick without any difficulty. Rumor has it that the island is to the south in terms of direction. The piece of paper was an invitation to a casino. That’s why people are going there. Yumeko guesses that they have blackjack, roulette, and slots. She asks if they can play baccarat. The game she’s most excited about is poker.

Yumeko asks Ryota if he’s going too. Ryota asks how much the fee is. He then notices on the paper that it’s free. He wonders why everyone doesn’t go there. Mary explains that students usually go abroad for long vacations, they don’t need to worry about the trip’s cost. Yumeko asks again if Ryota and Mary will go. Mary passes. Yumeko says it’ll be fun if the three of them go together. Mary answers that the casino is run by the Tourism Industry Research Association.

Yumeko was holding onto Saotome and didn’t let go. She suggests that they gamble to decide. Mary says that she’s not going anyway.

Yumeko tells her that if she wins, Mary will have to obey her during their trip at Ryouran Island, and if Mary wins, Yumeko will become her housepet. Mary accepts to gamble. Yumeko suggests they play Closed Poker. Ryota will be the dealer. He remembers that it’s with this game that Mary turned him into a housepet. They check the rules.

Five cards are distributed to each player. Each player discards any number of cards from his or her hand face down once. The same number of cards is added from the deck to the hand. The strength of the hand is used to determine the winner. In the case of equal hands, the strength of the cards and the suits are used to determine the winner.

Ryota shuffles the cards. He finds that Mary looks relaxed, but there must be some tension in her heart. Yumeko defeated Mary in the past, and she has beaten overwhelmingly strong players in the academy. Ryota gets nervous. He can't take it easy when he thinks about being there for Yumeko's gamble. Mary smiles, as she had not had a proper match with Yumeko since her defeat in Vote Rock-Paper-Scissors. Yumeko stares into Mary’s eyes with a soft expression. Ryota deals the cards.

Part 2[]

Ryota gathered in the morning and boarded a cruise ship at the pier with Yumeko and Mary. The ship was not luxurious, but it was large enough to accommodate several hundred people. Yumeko finds that Ryota looks very pale. On the deck, the students on board are excited about their upcoming vacation.

He thanks the person that brought him the cup.

Yumeko points out how this person brought many people. Ryota turns around. There was a group of people with their hands in front of their knees and their heads hanging down. Only the person in the center looked up.

Izayoi Kifune

Mary recognizes her. The girl is honored that Mary knows them. It is the first time she has met Yumeko and Mary. She’s very pleased to meet them both for the first time. The girl crossed her right leg behind her left and bowed grandly.

She presents herself. Her name is Izayoi Kifune. She is the manager and owner of the casino on Ryouran Island, the destination of the ship. Ryota reflexively returned the bow. Izayoi is the president of the Kansankai. She’s also a student at Hyakkaou Academy. She’s in her third year. Izayoi apologizes for the crime someone has committed.

Izayoi gets angry at him, asking him if he’s blaming the customers for this. He begs for forgiveness. She forces him to bow to their guests. She threatens to throw him overboard. He gets terrified and says he'll manage the room. Yumeko interrupted them.

The boy asks Yumeko for her name. She answers. Izayoi tells the boy to get out of here and call the island staff to prepare a room. Ryota is afraid of her. Izayoi moved extremely close to Yumeko.

Izayoi challenges Yumeko to a gamble. Yumeko asks in a calm voice what happens if she loses. Mary doesn’t think Yumeko should involve herself in this. She believes they would be ruining the casino’s reputation at the academy by doing this. Yumeko still accepted the challenge.

Part 3[]

Izayoi pointed at a bar counter a dozen meters away. The bar counter was lined with an unimaginable number of brightly colored bottles.

The menu list contained a large number of katakana characters. Ryota has never seen or read any of these names.

Mary tells her that it’s possible she has cherry-picked customers. She wants to decide on the next customer. Izayoi refuses to negotiate with Mary and says that it’s Yumeko’s gamble. Yumeko thanks Mary. Ryota finds Yumeko unreadable, as she had just gone from a cold expression to a kind one. He suddenly feels uneasy. Yumeko decides on which guest she wants to use.

Part 4[]

Ryota believes that no matter how much thought is put into it, there is no way to pinpoint the drink that the next customer will order.

Mary had set up the conditions for the game. Ryota believes that there would not be any difference in the situation between Yumeko and Izayoi. He has seen Yumeko gamble many times before, and in all of them, she has been able to do things that no ordinary person could even begin to fathom. According to Ryota, the most important thing that makes Yumeko different from the rest of them is her mindset. Yumeko's strength lies in the fact that she does not reject the essence of gambling, which is luck.

Yumeko uttered to Ryota soon after they met that she’d hate a game where she’d definitely win or one where she’d definitely lose. People in general do not accept the risk of losing when gambling. They try to win because they don't want to lose. It is a natural way of thinking. The attendants are waiting around them. Ryota wondered if Izayoi might be using a radio or some other device to listen in on their orders. There was nothing under Izayoi’s windswept hair.

The customer has to specify his/her preference before the drinks are made. The bartender takes a few bottles from the shelf and pours them into a silver sachet. He shakes them. Then, he stopped and poured a colorful reddish yellow liquid into a shallow-bottomed glass. Izayoi tells herself that the beverage is Cinderella.

Yumeko and Izayoi went to see another customer. A female student had just arrived.

He thinks she might be preparing some kind of strategy. The bartender handed the girl the drink. The girl walked toward the bench behind them.
