The Backstabbing Girl is the fifth chapter of the first volume of Kakegurui Twin written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Saiki Kei.
Plot[]
The chapter begins in a flashback with Sachiko Juraku questioning Aoi Mibuomi of having put Mary Saotome in the Union Party, her domain, but he claims he didn't care if she wanted to "devour her", because if she (Mary) lost, it meant that she wasn't worth it, however, particularly, thought she could pass that challenge.
Chitose fantasizing about love.
Returning to the present, the presenter, making sure that everyone would be seated at their tables, announced the free time for the participants to get to know each other better. The boys introduced themselves, in order, as Nobuya Sera, Ren Kochi, Haruto Kibashira, Mamoru Kuonji, and Kanade Musubi (Mary found that all but the last one were attractive and handsome). On the girls' side, Chitose Inui was the first to enthusiastically introduce herself, fantasizing about the love she could find there, to which Saotome really hoped that Chitose was deceiving them.
Ren and Haruto seemed impressed by the three (Mary, Tsuzura and Yukimi) running a betting room and trying to deduce Mary's type; she recanted and admitted that she liked very honest boys. Kanade asks Tsuzura what he likes and is happy that she is the ideal Japanese girl type – which Ren congratulates him. The presenter then announces the end of free time and the beginning of the discussion; the boys went one way and the girls another to discuss what they would do.
As Mary, Tsuzura and Yukimi received a separate invitation, they didn't know the stake, which is why the first one asked what it was, being shocked to learn from Kurumi Kurume that it was a million yen. Yukimi realized that they should use the dinner promise to get a discount. Mary finally realized that Aoi's goal was to test her usefulness, and if she wasn't really useful, he'd dismiss her out of hand, pissing her off.
To the surprise of the other two, however, Tsuzura suggests that they use the "sleeping together" discount as it would be the most viable for them to save money, interpreting it as a simple sleepover. As Yukimi, however, explained to her what it really meant, she was highly embarrassed. Mary ignored it and told the other girls about her plan to avoid couples in the game and also to each confess to a different boy (combining between them about Chitose confessing to Mamoru and Tsuzura definitely not confessing to Kanade). Writing down the plan and showing them – Chitose to Mamoru, Mary to Nobuya, Tsuzura to Ren, Yukimi to Kanade and Kurumi to Haruto, the presenter announced the end of the discussion and they returned.
However, Mary called Tsuzura and asked to switch the confession targets, much to the other's confusion. She explained that she saw the possibility of a traitor in the group and why she could only trust her not to at least form a couple. Alerting her to not being able to hesitate, she assured Tsuzura that they would stay on top and be victorious, just as she had done before.
Kurumi flirts with Haruto.
Back at the table, the presenter begins the confession stage. Mikura Sado is the dealer for table 3 and she explains about the cards to the two groups of girls and boys. Kurumi begins as Mary thinks about her plan, confident that at least she and Tsuzura wouldn't pair up for the exchanged targets, though she still has a strange feeling about it all. When Mikura asks Kurumi to name her target, she flirts with Haruto, but neither he nor the other boys respond, making Mary wonder if no one had chosen Kurumi at that point.
Mikura goes to the next girl who is Tsuzura. She exchanges a look with Mary, who mentally wonders if her plan was good enough. When Tsuzura announces that their target is Nobuya, Kanade is disappointed (for having believed that they got along well) and Yukimi whispers, noting that it was different from what they had agreed before, but Mary assures that it was only so they could win. Passing through all the other girls until finally arriving at Chitose who confessed to Mamoru; surprisingly, she says she was happy to hear this, which made her consider going on a date later, but she was interrupted by Mikura to continue the game.
Mikura tells the hostess that table three is ready and she announces that the dealers could give the results. As Chitose had suggested and no one cared, Mikura would announce it in order of confession. As for Kurumi, who confessed to Haruto, formed a couple with him, much to her surprise; they think of actually leaving, again with the interruption of Mikura, who wants to continue the announcement. Yukimi, who confessed to Kanade, formed a couple with him, who said he felt he could get along with her for her taste in literature and would make reservations at the most romantic restaurant (because she promised to have dinner).
Mary realizes that there must really be a traitor for two couples to form like this, stressing that she couldn't trust Kurumi and Yukimi even though the two paired up, relieved that she'd chosen Tsuzura to talk about it. His tranquility ended when she heard from the dealer that Tsuzura and Nobuya were also a couple. Then Mary with Ren and Chitose with Mamoru were also made official within the game. Therefore, five couples were made in this round.
Chitose and Kurumi didn't seem affected by the result, the trio of Mary, Tsuzura and Yukimi was devastated, especially Hanatemari, who started to cry in despair, while Mary refused to accept the results, accusing Mikura of cheating in the game. Sachiko intervened, ensuring they weren't cheating, suggesting that she stop ignoring her own incompetence and consider another possibility.
Who should Mary trust, anyway?
Finally, Mary came to consider that Tsuzura could be the traitor, Yukimi could be another traitor too. Mikura gave a microphone to Sachiko, who announced the end of the first round and the beginning of the second – which was not mandatory for those who participated in the first – where the amount bet would be doubled, in other words, two million yen. Sachiko commented on how she lost the million she won from Aoi, if she didn't do anything about it, she would end up becoming a pet herself. Mary, lost, didn't want to believe this until she heard Kurumi's laughter and his claim that she would lend her money if that was what she needed, but only two hundred thousand per person, suggesting that she use the "sleeping together" discount (90%) to make things more interesting and received support from Sachiko.
Tsuzura tried to talk to Mary when she didn't want them to talk to her. Mary was tired of being deceived. Mary didn't know who she could trust now.
