Kirari Momobami to Souko Jabami

The Betting Girls is the 99th chapter of Kakegurui, written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Toru Naomura.

Summary[]

Souko and Yumeko’s aunt didn’t come home for three days. Yumeko believes that Souko knows something about it. Souko is surprised about her sister figuring that out. She indeed knows what happened. However, she doesn’t confirm Yumeko’s suspicions.

Kabura suddenly arrives at the Jabami’s home and informs Souko that her aunt made a petition to change the head of the Jabami family. She is thus called over to the manor. Souko isn’t surprised since she had suspicions about it the past few days. Kabura gives Souko money as a goodbye gift. She assures her that this money is going to be of help. Jabami sisters head to the main family’s manor.

Ririka, Kirari, Tsugiko, Yumeko, and Souko are gathered in a room. Kirari forces Tsugiko and Souko to play a game to determine who will be the head of the Jabami family despite Souko being reluctant to do this. When asked, Tsugiko doesn't deny killing Souko’s parents.

Kirari explains her decision of having them gamble against each other. Souko became the leader of the Jabami family without even proving her gambling skills. She adds more odds to the gamble. If Tsugiko loses, she’ll be banished from the Momobami family tree. If Souko loses, Tsugiko will adopt Yumeko as her daughter. This means that if Tsugiko wins, Yumeko will be her successor as Jabami clan leader.

Yumeko lets her sister know that she realized that they might get separated from each other. Souko responds that she’ll never let that happen.

Plot[]

Souko and Yumeko’s aunt didn’t come home for three days. Yumeko doesn’t think that she’s in trouble, despite her never doing that. Yumeko also believes that Souko knows something about this situation. Souko is surprised about her sister being sharp enough to figure that out. Souko indeed knows what happened. However, she doesn’t confirm Yumeko’s suspicions.

Kabura suddenly arrives at the Jabami’s home. She came, rushing, to inform Souko that there was a petition to change the head of the Jabami family. The main branch of the Momobami family approved it. Souko is thus called over to the manor. Yumeko is perplexed. Kabura explains that Tsugiko, Yumeko’s auntie, filed a motion to hand Souko’s title of Jabami leader to her.

Souko isn’t surprised. She had suspicions about it the past few days. Kabura gives Souko money as a goodbye gift. Souko doesn’t want to accept it. Kabura assures her that this money is going to be of help. Souko accepts the money and says that she’ll pay Kabura back. The Jabami sisters head to the main family’s manor.

Ririka, Kirari, Tsugiko, Yumeko, and Souko are gathered in a room. Kirari welcomes them. She tells them that they’ll play a game to determine who will be the head of the Jabami family. Souko is reluctant to gamble for this. She nervously asks her auntie, Tsugiko, if she’s the one who killed her parents.

Tsugiko, in response, asks Souko what she would do if that were true. She presses Souko to accept the gamble against her. Kirari summarizes the situation for Souko. Tsugiko had sent her a petition to change the head of the Jabamy family. Tsugiko was just an acting head for many years. Souko then received the family head position while being underage. It happened despite her gambling skills not being tested during the selection process.

Kirari concluded that in this case Souko’s gambling skills must be tested and her opponent must be Tsugiko. As the Momobami family’s main branch leader, Kirari orders that Souko and Tsugiko gamble against each other to decide who will become the head of the Jabami family. Kirari then adds further conditions.

If Tsugiko loses, she’ll be banished from the Momobami family tree. If Souko loses, Tsugiko will adopt Yumeko as her daughter. Kirari explains Yumeko being involved in this by saying that she’s a potential family heir. In the scenario of Tsugiko winning, Yumeko would become her daughter which would make Yumeko the Jabami family head when Tsugiko loses this role.

Souko tries to run back home with Yumeko. Kirari forbids her from doing that. Tsugiko tells Souko that she must play against her. That is Souko’s only remaining path to survival. Yumeko lets her sister know that she realized that they might get separated from each other. Souko responds that she’ll never let that happen.
