I know exactly why I lost. It’s because she read almost all of my claimed hands perfectly. The doubts made the difference. It’s just like how it was with Kanade’s friends. I lost based on pure talent. My own power wasn’t enough to beat Sachiko.

Mary Saotome to herself

The Conflicted Girl is the 21st chapter of Kakegurui Twin, written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Kei Saiki.

Summary[]

Mary and Sachiko play a game of Doubt Poker. Mary wins two rounds in a row and gains a total of slightly over 2,500,000 million yen. Sachiko figured out how to read Mary nearly perfectly with these two rounds. She wins successive rounds until putting Mary in a five million yen deficit. Mary thus lost. Kurumi enters and offers Mary five million yen, which she initially declines, but accepts in the end. Mary will have to repay Kurumi slightly more than five million but is now back in the game.

Plot[]

Kurumi meets Kanade and his friends. They inform her that they’ve lost all of their money at Mary’s den. Kurumi finds this interesting and heads there.

Meanwhile, Mary and Sachiko have a Doubt Poker match. Mary replaces three cards, Sachiko replaces one. Yukimi fears Sachiko because she’s the head of the morals committee and part of the student council. Sachiko, who was looking forward to this matchup, opens the bid with 100,000 yen. Mary immediately raises one million, shocking Mikura and Yukimi. Yukimi thinks that this is a high-risk, low-return bet on Mary’s part. Sachiko calls without hesitating. Yukimi panics.

Tsuzura still believes in her clubmate. Sachiko declares that she has three queens; Mary says that she possesses a full house. The student council member doubts while Mary doesn’t. Both Yukimi and Sachiko are surprised by this. Mary reveals her hand. It’s really a full house. Since Sachiko’s doubt failed, Mary gains 2,010,000 yen. As Mary celebrates her victory, Sachiko coldly stares at her.

In the next round, Sachiko raises half a million yen. Her opponent calls. Mary claims that her hand is a pair of sevens; Sachiko, a pair of tens. Yukimi just figures out that the first person to call out their hand in the round is at a disadvantage since the opponent can adjust the claim they would have otherwise made. Mary doubts. Sachiko doesn’t doubt back. She then shows her worthless hand. Mary gains 510,000 more yen.

These successive wins made Mary pass the halfway to the five million mark. Mikura smiles, as she knows what’s about to happen. Sachiko tells Mary that she’s got the gist of it. The Literary Club members are puzzled by this comment. Sachiko bets 100,000 yen. Mary raises one million on the spot. Her adversary calls. The Public Morals Committee’s head states that she has two pairs of sevens and queens. It’s harder to win by declaring a hand weaker than the opponent’s, so going first can tempt someone to claim a strong hand.

As Mary is thinking about her move, Sachiko asks her if she has nothing. She praises her for betting a million on nothing. Mary can’t believe that Sachiko read her perfectly. She regains her composure and tells the truth: her hand is a ten high. Sachiko doesn’t doubt. Mary does. Because Sachiko didn’t lie about her hand, she wins 2,010,000 yen.

Kurumi enters the Library Prep Room number two. Sachiko has put despair all over the Literary Club members’ faces. Tsuzura, the referee, crowns Sachiko as the victor. She won the last round with a successful doubt, which gave her 1,010,000 million. The five million yen is now gone.

Mary Nervous Breakdown

Mary tells herself that she has lost because Sachiko could read nearly all of her claimed hands perfectly. Kanade’s friends lost in the same fashion. Sachiko suggests that she lends Mary money. Mary declines, as it’s a one-way ticket to becoming a housepet. Tsuzura thinks it’s the only option. Kurumi walks up to Mary. She hands her five million yen. At first, Mary is reluctant but finally decides to accept since it can help her become a winner. She’ll have to repay Kurumi slightly more than five million but is now back in the game.
