The Deadlocked Girls is the 78th chapter of Kakegurui Twin, written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Kei Saiki.
Summary[]
Niwa, a referee, announces that they’ll be playing the Feudalism Game. Each player will be loaned 100 million yen. Three kinds of pieces exist: king, knight, and serf. The game will keep going until one of three players runs out of money. Debts from the loser will be owed to the winner. As in a rock-paper-scissors format, king beats knight, knight beats serf, and serf beats king. A die roll system makes it so kings might lose against each other. Mary, Yua, and Sachiko all agree to play. Round one begins, and every player chooses a knight, the set is a draw. Players agree to skip to round two. During round two, everyone chooses a knight again, so it ends in a tie. Yukimi sweats as she realizes her hunch about something being off about the rules was right.
Plot[]
Niwa Ohwani, referee from the Election Committee, will oversee the gambling match, as Kirari demanded. The Literary Club members and referee enter a tea room with a tiny entryway. Yukimi explains that it was built so people would be forced to bow their heads to enter, symbolizing how everyone becomes equal when they enter this room. Yua points out that the entrance behind Sachiko is a normal door, meaning she just wants to see her visitors bow to her. Mary tells herself to stay wary, as they’re fighting in Sachiko’s territory and anything may happen there. Niwa announces that they’ll be playing the Feudalism Game. She reads out Kirari’s plot.
In Europe, during medieval times, a feudal system was used. The king allocated pieces of land to knights, who ruled over serfs attached to the pieces of land. While knights were vassals of the king; knight’s vassals, serfs, weren’t vassals of the king. The Feudalism Game is based on this. Niwa brings 300 million yen and sets of pieces. Three kinds of pieces exist: king, knight, and serf.
Each player begins with 100 million yen and a set of five pieces containing each of the three types (3 serfs, 1 knight, and 1 king). When all contestants put 10 million yen as a wager, they each play one of their pieces at once. This sequence is called a set. A set’s winner is decided by rules she’ll explain later. The loser of a set is knocked out and the game continues between the two remaining players. Until only one player is left or all the pieces run out. If one player remains, she wins the 30 million yen in the pot. Then the round ends. Rounds will keep going until one of three players runs out of money, which will make the overall game end.
The 300 million yen Niwa brought will be loaned evenly to the three contestants. Debts from the loser will be owed to the winner. As in a rock-paper-scissors format, king beats knight, knight beats serf, and serf beats king. If all three kinds of pieces are played at the same time, it’s a draw. If two kings are up against each other, they shake the king pieces then open them up and read what the die inside of each of them says. Four faces of a die say ‘king’, two say ‘zero’. If a die reads ‘zero’, the player with it automatically loses no matter the situation. Yukimi feels like something’s wrong with the game. Mary, Yua, and Sachiko all agree to play. As the middle schoolers don’t have 100 million yen on them, Mary neither, and it’d be humiliating for Sachiko to lose to a middle schooler, Yua says that no one here can afford to lose this time.
Round one begins. As every player chooses a knight, the set is a draw. Yukimi has foreseen this as the king automatically loses against the serfs which make up 3/5 of others’ hands and the king still has a chance of losing against another king by rolling zero. Since it’s obvious every player will play serfs thrice and then play king, she suggests they skip to round 2, which the players agree to do. During round two, everyone chooses a knight again, so it ends in a tie. Yukimi sweats as she realizes her hunch about something being off about the rules was right.
