Gambling is all about taking risk to earn a profit. If there’s no risk, there’s no profit either. If someone avoids all risk of losing, no matter what, then they will lose for sure. And if her plan was this shoddy, then Mary is no one special at all.

Shougou Soga to himself.

The Latecomer Girl is the 71st chapter of Kakegurui Twin, written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Kei Saiki.

Summary[]

There is a game of Dice Poker with Kanade and his friends, along with Shougou. The team of five is surprised that Shougou is winning against all of them, even though they are following Mary's strategy of using their numerical advantage. Nobuya had informed Shougou of their plan. Ren has a strong hand, a Full House, and raises the bet to ten chips, but Shougou calmly raises it to 200 chips. Not willing to take such a big risk, Ren folds. Ren pretends his hand wasn't strong. He wants to let someone else handle the risk. Shougou figured out that a group of people teaming up on him could be a good strategy, but none of the people was willing to take risks, so they wouldn't earn profit. Mary joins the game, revealing that the plan's failure was expected. Shougou asks Mikoto to watch out for whoever might cheat. Shougou and Mikoto are confident they can beat Mary as a team, as they’ve already exposed plenty of cheaters in the past.

Plot[]

Flashback[]

Back in middle school, Shougou was getting bullied because of a cheater he exposed. Mikoto stepped in to help Shougou. She wanted to fight the bullies for revenge, but Shougou explained it was pointless. Yua then walked up to them. She believed Shougou’s body and Mikoto’s heart were hurting. Yua reached out to them and suggested they become friends and take revenge together.

Present[]

Kanade and his friends, along with Shougou, are playing Dice Poker and are shocked to see that Shougou is winning one-against-five. On top of that, they were sticking to Mary’s plan.

Mary’s plan consisted of using their number advantage. The team member with the strongest hand would play while the others would drop out. Nobuya admits to himself that he told the opponent about their plan.

Ren’s hand is now a Full House with 5-5-5-1-1. He raises to ten chips. Shougou calmly raises to 200 chips. Ren is stunned. The middle schoolers are reminded that their bet is worth 2 million yen. They don’t mind. Ren thinks he has the advantage, but realizes the impact if he loses. He decides to fold, not wanting to risk owing so much.

Ren lies by saying his hand wasn’t that good. He tells himself that as long as one of the team members wins, they’re good. Shougou analyzes that strength in numbers is a good strategy only if people are willing to collaborate. Each of them was willing to let someone else handle the risk.

Shougou knows that this thinking process is lethal in gambling because it’s about taking risks to earn profit. In this case, the boys aren’t taking any risk, so they won’t make a profit. Shougou tells himself that if this was Mary’s plan, she’s not special.

Mary suddenly walks into the room and sits down. Kanade admits to Mary that the plan isn’t working. Mary responds that this was within her expectations. Mikoto asks if Tsuzura and Yukimi will join in. Mary reminds them that she’d have won last time if Yua hadn’t intervened. She says that she’s enough to beat the two of them. Shougou points out to Mikoto that there must be some kind of aim to Tsuzura and Yukimi not playing.

Shougou asks Mikoto not to miss seeing whatever Mary or someone else might do. Shougou and Mikoto have been exposing cheaters for a long time. They’re confident they’ll beat Mary as a team.
