Summary[]
Naoko and Houko want to get Aoi’s position of leader of Full-Bloom. They think Aoi is qualified, but they will never be at the top if Aoi keeps his position. Aoi has the final say on every Full-Bloom activity and nobody in the group has enough popularity to defy him. They never know when he might kick them out like Sakura. Ouri storms in the room, annoyed. She heard the Ougatou sisters revealing their betrayal. Ouri doesn’t plan on telling Aoi, she wants to get rid of the siblings right now.
Ouri wants a match the losers won’t be able to recover from: “A death match.” She then threatens to report the sisters’ schemes to Aoi if they refuse the match. Naoko and Houko pick a game called Hidden Rules. Houko summarizes the rules of the game by saying players just have to guess rules while dealers try to pick ones that'll get guessed in seven or eight cards. Mary took a look at the rules deck and decided she’d aim for the middle difficulty rules. Naoko then announces the stakes: The people that rank fourth and fifth will become the first and second’s personal housepets. Mary and Mikura both can’t afford to lose.
Houko is the first dealer. She plays three of spades. Mary and Mikura had decided on signals because want to share their rules with each other. Since they've already made two trips around the table, Houko asks if anyone is going to attempt a reveal. Mary believes that this was a good lesson: The later the rule is revealed, the better, but if they're too hard to figure out, you'll lose ten points, so you need to strike a balance. Naoko guesses the rule, which was "play multiples of three in spade-club-heart-spade order. Mary is shocked.
Plot[]
Mary is surprised about Naoko and Houko trying to get Aoi’s seat. They answer that since he’s intelligent, kind, handsome, and the founder, he deserves to run Full-Bloom, but they will never be at the top as long as he runs it. Mary says that she thought the role of president was just a ceremonial post. Houko says it isn’t true. Aoi has the final say on every Full-Bloom activity. Nobody in the group has enough popularity to defy him and they never know when he might kick them out like Sakura. They’re about to choose a game, but they’re interrupted by someone storming into the room.
It was Ouri. She was annoyed and asked the Ougatou sisters if what they said was a joke. Houko asks Naoko if they said anything. Naoko answers that she doesn’t remember. Ouri gets angry at them and says to not mess with her. She now knows what the sisters are about. She believes that this act of betrayal threatens to destroy the peace within Full-Bloom. Naoko and Houko don’t seem to care and ask Ouri if she’s going to tell on them. Ouri answers no, and adds that she will get rid of them right here, right now.
Ouri says that there is no need for Aoi to “dirty” his hands and she asks to join the game. She wants a match the losers won’t be able to recover from: “A death match.” Ouri then threatens to report the sisters’ schemes to Aoi if they refuse the match. Houko accepts, saying this will be a five-player game. Mary believes that this match is petty and doesn’t want to be dragged into it. The Ougatou siblings tell Mary to leave if she’s not fine with that. The game the five of them will play is called Hidden Rules.
Rules[]
The game is played with a deck of 52 cards for each player and a deck of 50 "rule cards" (掟カード). Rule cards determine which cards are allowed to be played during the round. For example, a rule card may establish that players have to alternate between hearts and spades, or that only cards with odd numbers are allowed. Without being shown said card, the other players have to guess the hidden rule during the game.
First, a player (the dealer) draws three rule cards and chooses one. Afterward, they play a card and declare if it matches the hidden rule. One after the other, the players have to play a card each, trying to conform to the rule; the dealer will personally declare if a card is allowed or not. If a card matches, the player who used it gains one point. When a player has realized the pattern of the hidden rule, they can try stating it: if they are correct, they gain ten points. However, every player can only try to guess the rule once per round. If nobody is able to guess the hidden rule after ten turns or two trips around the table, the dealer is penalized and loses every point they gained during the match plus another ten points.
Before the First Round[]
Mikura complains about the game being too complicated. Houko admits that it is complicated. She summarizes the rules of the game by saying players just have to guess rules while dealers try to pick ones that'll get guessed in seven or eight cards. Mary asks what the other rules cards are. She was allowed to take a look at the deck. Mary wants to aim for the middle difficulty rules. Ouri wants the sisters to say what the stakes are. Naoko announces that the people that rank fourth and fifth will become the first and second’s personal housepets. This shocks Mary and Mikura.
Naoko then points out to Mary that getting five million won’t be a problem if she turns them into housepets. Mary is worried, thinking that there isn't a single person in this school who doesn't want to enslave someone. Mikura would rather die than serve two masters. Mary and Mikura can’t afford to lose this game.
First Round[]
Houko is the first dealer. She plays three of spades. Mary and Mikura are convinced that this game is theirs. They've decided on signals for each other. They want to share their rules with each other. Mikura plays two of hearts, but Houko says it's an illegal move. Naoko places six of clubs and receives one point. Ouri’s three of hearts and Mary’s nine of hearts are successively rejected, as they’re illegal. Houko then plays the queen of hearts. Mikura believes that guessing the rule is hard to do with just three cards. She tries to figure out the rule but can’t think of any that makes sense. She then plays three of clubs, which is rejected. Houko tells Naoko to hurry up, as she’s about to get penalized.
Mary thought that the answer was "multiples of three," but she was wrong. She wonders if the rule is more complicated than that. Naoko shows her five of hearts and smirks. Houko says it’s illegal, surprising Naoko. Ouri's three of diamonds and Mary's nine of diamonds are illegal. They've already made two trips around the table, so Houko asks if anyone is going to attempt a reveal. Mary believes that this was a good lesson: The later the rule is revealed, the better, but if they're too hard to figure out, you'll lose ten points, so you need to strike a balance. Naoko guesses the rule, which was: "Play multiples of three in spade-club-heart-spade order." Mary is shocked.
