Yeah, you're pretty good. But you're still in middle school. You don't get it. You don't know how scary gambling is and I'm about to give you a lesson.

Mary Saotome to Shougou Soga.

The Scheming Girl is the 72nd chapter of Kakegurui Twin, written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Kei Saiki.

Summary[]

The referee explains the rules of Dice Poker. Shougou suspects Mary already knows the game. Mary converts 3 million yen into chips confidently, surprising Kanade. She plans to take down Shougou and Mikoto to bring Yua here. Because of Mary’s confidence in her win, Shougou and Mikoto understand she has a strategy.

In one round, Shougou makes a high bet and wins with a weak hand, because the others fell for his bluff and folded. Later, Shougou beats Mary in a 300,00 yen bet. Shougou attributes his victory to luck. He thinks being good at gambling means being able to play standard but also take risks. Mary more than fits that description.

In the next round, Ren thinks he has a good hand and bets 100,000. Mary raises to 200,000. Haruto calls it. Shougou shocks the table by raising to 1,000,000. Ren and Haruto fold. Mary calls, as expected by Shougou. He wins the showdown.

Shougou comes to the conclusion that he’s tied with Mary, but thanks to Kanade and his friends playing too, he’s bound to benefit more from every win because of the folding, which gives him the edge. Mary tells Shougou that he’s good, but still in middle school. She declares that she’ll teach him a gambling lesson next round.

Plot[]

The referee goes over the rules of Dice Poker.

Dice Poker Hands Strength

As its name implies, it’s poker with dice. The strongest hand is Five Dice, and the weakest hand is a One Pair. First, all participants pay one token as the ante. Each action is performed clockwise. Players have two things to do: roll their dice, and bet. To roll their dice, players put them in a cup and shake it. Then, any number of dice are put aside. They keep the remaining dice in the cup, and shake them again. When everyone finishes, the game goes just like in regular Poker with bets, calls, raises, folds, showdowns, etc.

Shougou notices that Mary is pretending to have never seen the game before. He thinks she’s already familiar with the game because Nobuya called her here. Mary converts three million yen to chips. Kanade is surprised, as he knows Mary needs that money. Mary asserts that she’ll take Shougou and Mikoto out, and drag Yua to the table. Mikoto and Shougou understand that Mary has a surefire way of winning in mind.

Haruto raises to 50,000 and Nobuya calls. Shougou calmly raises to 300,000. Mamoru believes that Shougou has at least a full house, as the two open dice are sixes. Both Nobuya and Haruto fold. Shougou thus wins the round. His hand was weak.

Shougou raises to 300,000 chips. Mary responds by raising to 500,000. Shougou believes Mary is only competing hard because she’s got a good hand. Her open dice show two fives. He thus calls Mary’s bet. Shougou wins the showdown with three ones against Mary’s two fives. Shougou tells himself that they only won by luck.

He thinks being good at gambling means being able to play standard but also take risks. Mary more than fits that description. Mikoto snaps Shougou back to reality and motivates him.

Ren has three fives and bets 100,000. He hopes that nobody joins in the bet. Mary then raises to 200,000. Haruto calls too. Shougou raises to 1,000,000, shocking Haruto and Ren. Ren realizes that Shougou is probably bluffing by always betting big, and can't always get good rolls. Shougou knows Ren's thinking process. He knows he'll fold since he can't tell the strength of Shougou's hand. Shougou is right, as Ren folds. Mary calls, which was within Shougou’s expectation.

They have a showdown. Shougou wins with four threes against Mary’s full house. Tsuzura and Yukimi get worried. Shougou feels as if this game is his, not simply because he won, but because he risked 1 million and obtained 1.3 million back.
