The Slit-Eyed Girl is the third chapter of Volume One of Kakegurui written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Toru Naomura.
Summary[]
Yumeko Jabami wants to be shown around the school again by Ryota Suzui. They both witness Mary Saotome losing against Yuriko Nishinotouin, and ending up with 49.6 million yen debt. Yumeko then proceeds to play with Yuriko next, and criticizes her method of gambling.
Plot[]
A week after her victory against Itsuki Sumeragi, Yumeko Jabami was surrounded by her classmates, who invited her to do various things and she thanks for the invitations, but apologizes for already having something to do. Following the sign indicating the end of classes, Yumeko came to Ryota's side at her desk, asking him to show her the school again. The three girls said they could do it for her, but Yumeko claimed that she specifically wanted Ryota for this task.
Both meet at the Traditional Culture Club, being greeted by a member who informed them that an official match was taking place. Yumeko was in doubt about what it was, so Ryota explained to her how it worked. The same person from before introduced Yuriko Nishinotouin in a bet with Mary Saotome, who suspected that her opponent was cheating because of the unilateral results.
Asking how many chips would be wagered, Yuriko was surprised to see that thirty-two was Mary's remainder. The croupier confirmed the bets on both sides and put the ten spades into the cup, so both placed the chips on their numbers. Mary prayed that she could get at least one number right and perked up as soon as she saw that number twenty-two was scored, only to have her hopes dashed when Yuriko called it "death". The croupier considered Yuriko's chips and now Mary was owed forty-nine million and six hundred thousand yen. As Ryota noted, she would be a pet for the rest of her life.
When Yuriko kicked her out, the same member who welcomed Ryota and Yumeko tried to keep up with Mary, but she screamed and stopped her from touching her, thinking how she shouldn't have gotten involved with Yumeko when she passed her. As soon as she left, Yuriko greeted Yumeko and invited her to play Life or Death, the "game of the day". When she agreed and Ryota thought she expected it, the dealer, Kumagusu, explained the rules, then Yuriko suggested forty million as a bet amount with one million chips each, to which the other agreed.
They started by betting ten chips. Kumagusu put the swords in the cups and told the two to bet. Yumeko put her chips on the number board at the last minute, having told Yuriko that she was impatient, and Yuriko agreed. The croupier removed the glass and revealed the two numbers marked by the swords: seventeen and thirty. Yumeko didn't hit any, while Yuriko didn't hit either, having missed by one.
Ryota tried to get Yumeko to stop playing, but she just wanted to enjoy the game. While the two players agreed that it was a good feeling, Yumeko just belittled Yuriko's way of playing for giving Mary hope and then crushing them, calling her the worst kind of human possible. Kumagusu is offended by that and tries to expel them, but is surprised by Yuriko's annoyed expression.
