The Steadfast Girl is the 71st chapter of Kakegurui, written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Toru Naomura.

Summary

It’s the final of the Grand Tournament. Mary will go against Yumeko in Rock Paper Scissors Poker. The game is broadcast, and Sayaka explains the rules one more time for everyone, and adds that they won’t tell a player if the other is cheating. Mary used the only rock in her hand to defeat Yumeko’s scissors-centric hand. She knew that Yumeko’s hand was mostly made of scissors because Miyo’s marks were still on the cards. They didn’t change the deck of cards. Terano and Rin noticed Mary’s use of Miyo’s cheating. Students are making small bets on the summary meeting matches, and Terano is trying to take advantage of it.

Plot

It’s the final of the Grand Tournament. Mary will go against Yumeko in Rock Paper Scissors Poker. Itsuki is certain that Yumeko will easily win. Kaede doesn’t agree. He thinks Mary is a fighter, so nobody knows who will win.

The match is broadcast. Ryota is watching it, and has no idea who to cheer for. Sayaka explains the rules one more time for everyone. She also says that they won’t tell a player if the other is cheating. The game starts with Mary having 368 votes, and Yumeko having 132. Mary believes that Yumeko just uses cheating as a way to make gambling more fun, and that she, herself, uses it to earn wins.

Mary changes three cards, and Yumeko keeps her hand. This surprises Ryota because not changing cards usually puts you at a disadvantage. However, keeping your whole hand leaves your opponent with no clue of what your card might be. Mary does her best not to get freaked out by what card Yumeko will play. Mary bets ten votes and Yumeko calls. The showdown is won by Mary with rock against scissors.

Mary’s hand was made of four papers, and one rock, so Erimi didn’t understand why Mary played her rock.

Terano and Rin notice that there is cheating going on. Ibara didn’t notice. Rin says that Mary took advantage of the cheat that was there. A single deck has been used for every match, none of the cards were replaced. Erimi and Miyo had marked the cards. Mary played Miyo in the last round, so she saw the cards up close many times.

Mary could guess that her hand was scissor-centric, so she went with rock. The marks can be seen on screen with the right camera angles. Ibara is impressed by Terano and Rin noticing.

Students are making bets over the results of the summary meeting matches. Itsuki finds it funny that people make small bets about that. Kaede imagines a scenario with someone predicting this, and trying to take advantage of it.

Yumi tells a crowd of people that everything worked out exactly how Terano said it would, and that they should listen to what Terano says, and they’ll all walk home happy.
