Naoko Ougatou to Ouri Shimotsukiuri

The Trusting Girl is the 25th chapter of Kakegurui Twin, written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Kei Saiki.

Summary[]

Mary and Mikura are convinced that the Ougatou sisters are cheating. Mikura is the dealer in the second round. Mary thinks that Naoko and Houko are using signs, just like them. Mikura took her time with the rule card selection because she couldn’t afford to lose since she didn’t want to be the housepet of someone other than Sachiko. As the round goes, Mikura wonders if she went too far, but she concludes that she took the best approach Mary and she have got: Use simple rule cards because both duos are cheating, but Naoko and Houko had way more time to refine their skills. Naoko tried a reveal but guessed the wrong rule. Mary plays a card, which gets her a point, and then reveals that the rule is hearts card only. She is correct.

During the third round, Naoko was the dealer. Houko guessed the rule after ten turns. Houko provokes Ouri by asking her if she's just going to lose like this after picking this fight. Naoko reveals to Ouri that they knew that she had sent people to check on them. The Ougatou sisters are well aware that Ouri is a nuisance for them. They send Ouri’s words right back at her by saying that they’re going to get rid of her right here, right now. Naoko adds that once Ouri becomes their housepet, they'll have her tell Kirari that Aoi is trying to take her down. The fourth round starts with Naoko and Houko having 22 points, Mary 11, Mikura 5, and Ouri 2. Mary believes that this round is gonna be important because, since Ouri is the dealer, this is their only chance to get ahead. She wants to score as many points as possible.

Mary doesn’t think Ouri picked a difficult rule card because she only has two points, and can’t afford not to have her rule guessed. Mary ends up concluding that any more than the rule being a two-suit cycle is too complicated for Ouri to have picked. Houko and Mary reveal at the same time. Houko lets Mary go first. Based on the cards played, Mary can't be sure of the rule. Going first gives her no advantage. So, she believes that this is just Houko's way of testing her. Mary came to the conclusion that the rule is to play a diamond and then an even club. She doubts herself because her logic is built on a lot of theories. Houko suggests to Mary that she passes because she took a lot of time and didn't answer. Mikura asks Mary when she got so indecisive. Mary answers that she has her own approach. Mikura tells her that she doesn't have to worry and that she may very well become Sachiko's housepet. Mikura is helping her because she's admitting that this is a possible outcome. She asks Mary not to her down. Mary thinks that Mikura is right. She's never going to win if she waits for 100% certainty because this is a gamble. Mary reveals "play diamond and even club in order.” She was correct.

Plot[]

Mary and Mikura are convinced that there is no way Naoko guessed a rule as complex as "multiples of 3 in spade-club-heart-spade" order with so few cards. They believe that the sisters are cheating.

Round Two[]

Mikura is the dealer. Mary had made sure that the rule cards shuffle was done correctly, so Naoko couldn't have staged a reveal. Mary and Mikura came to the conclusion that the Ougatou duo is using the same strategy as them: Using signs to communicate with each other.

Mikura had considered the possibility of Naoko and Houko cheating because this is their room, and they've picked the game. However, Mikura hadn't anticipated that they'd immediately start cheating because, originally, the stakes were that the sisters would have to pay five million yen. However, Ouri had come and wrecked everything. Because of Ouri, the Ougatou siblings couldn’t afford to lose. Mikura took her time with the rule card selection. She couldn’t afford to lose either since she didn’t want to be the housepet of someone other than Sachiko.

Mikura plays five of diamonds, which is illegal. Naoko then plays six of hearts, which is legal. Ouri plays eight of hearts, and it’s legal. Mikura wonders if she went too far, but she concludes that this is the best approach Mary and her have got. She hopes that her intent got across to Mary. Since both duos are cheating against each other, Mary believes that the rest should have been up to luck, but it's not. Naoko and Houko had come into the game with their cheat ready, and they had time to refine their skills, so Mary and Mikura’s signs aren’t as elaborate as the sisters’. This makes Mary believes that they should use simple rule cards.

Naoko is about to reveal. Mary thinks that if she loses this chance to tell the answer, there is no way they can win. Naoko guessed that the rules were even-number hearts. She was wrong. Mikura is panicking, as Mary is not guessing. Mary plays seven of hearts, which is legal. As Houko is thinking that the rule might be a more complex one, Mary reveals that the rule is hearts card only. She is correct. Mary knew the rule but waited a turn to score one more point.

Round 3[]

Naoko was the dealer. She picked a rule card and played six of clubs, which is illegal. Ouri’s king of diamonds, and Mary’s two of hearts got successively rejected. After the tenth turn, Houko guesses that the rule is to play an odd heart, an odd spade, and then a club that's a multiple of three. This reveal was a success. Houko tells Mary that they're gonna win like this. She then provokes Ouri by asking her if she's just going to lose like this after picking this fight. Ouri asks her what she’s trying to say.

Naoko answers that she knows that Ouri has been keeping an eye on them because a lot of first-time players had joined their room lately. These players didn't use much money and just scoped out the place and left. The Ougatou sisters are well aware that Ouri is a nuisance for them. They send Ouri’s words right back at her by saying that they’re going to get rid of her right here, right now. Naoko adds that once Ouri becomes their housepet, they'll have her go to the council and tell Kirari that Aoi is after her. The elder Ougatou sibling would love to see Aoi’s face after they make Ouri tell on him.

Round 4[]

When this round starts, Naoko and Houko have 22 points, Mary has 11, Mikura has 5, and Ouri has 2. Mary believes that this round is gonna be important. The sisters cheat so well that Mikura and Mary can't beat them in a direct fight. Mary thinks that this is their only chance to get ahead. She wants to score as many points as possible while Ouri is the dealer. After picking a rule card, Ouri places a ten of diamonds, which is legal. Mary doesn’t think Ouri picked a difficult rule card because she only has two points, and can’t afford not to have her rule guessed. Mary plays an eight of diamonds, but it’s illegal. Naoko’s nine of hearts too.

Mary concludes that any more than the rule being a two-suit cycle is too complicated for Ouri to have picked. Mikura plays a four of clubs and it’s legal. Naoko plays seven of diamonds, which is also legal. Ouri plays an illegal jack of spades. Houko and Mary revealed at the same time. Mikura suggests that they answer at the same time and that they both receive half of the points if they get it right. However, Houko lets Mary go first. Based on the cards played, Mary can't be sure of the rule. Going first gives her no advantage. So, she concludes that this is just Houko's way of testing her.

Mary reveals "play diamonds and even clubs in order.” She was correct.
