The Woman Who Bets Her Life is the eleventh episode of Season One in the Kakegurui animated series. It is produced by MAPPA and aired in Japan on the 16th of September, 2017.
Summary[]
In order to keep up with Manyuda's bets, Itsuki is forced to put her very life on the line, valued in money. The Vice-president also reveals herself to be the President herself. After Yumeko manages to win against Kaede, she also challenges Kirari to a gamble and she agrees.
Plot[]
Kirari announces she will no longer support the other family heads, much to their horror. The next hand, Yumeko and Kaede keep betting until Yumeko runs out of chips again, however, the two continue to buy more chips until Kaede raises by 100 chips to force her to stop from lack of money. Yumeko suggests Itsuki bet her life, i.e. to receive a Life Schedule, and although she refuses at first but after seeing Yumeko’s cards she rips out her own fingernails and willingly bets her life. Based on Itsuki’s family wealth Ririka declares her Life Schedule to be worth 10 billion, prompting to Kaede challenge the decision. Ririka then removes her mask, revealing she is actually Kirari in disguise and that the two are twins. With Yumeko’s bet now totaling 12 billion Kaede desperately bets his own Life Schedule for 10 billion and chooses strong. However, Yumeko reveals Itsuki’s desperation was a plot to deceive Kaede into choosing strong and reveals she has three jacks, beating Kaede’s three eights. Kaede ends up billions in debt and loses his Council seat. Yumeko and Kirari sit down to discuss their reasons for gambling, with both of them appearing to have some sort of attraction to each other. The two finally face each other in a gambling match.
Character Appearances[]
Differences between anime and manga[]
- This one is rather significant. In the anime, after Yumeko beats Kaede, she challenges Kirari to a gamble, which she accepts. In the manga, however, Sayaka interrupts Yumeko and Kirari’s conversation and challenges Yumeko herself. Although the Tower of Doors gamble happens much later in season two, the rearranging of this event is still worth noting (Chapter 27 and 28).
- When Sayaka decided to challenge Yumeko in the manga, it was because she felt like the Student Council were losing their grip on the school due to Yumeko’s influence, and she felt insecure in a relationship with Kirari. This was fresh off of Kirari disguising herself as Ririka while not informing Sayaka, who was thought to be her most trusted ally. So, after Kirari continued to be secretive in her motives while also acting friendly towards Yumeko, Sayaka made the choice to challenge Yumeko to reclaim her place in Kirari’s heart. In the anime, Sayaka challenges Yumeko randomly, albeit she was jealous because of Kirari’s comments, but it was also in the middle of the Election Arc, so the gamble came off as misplaced (Chapter 27 and 28).
